Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans, and much repair work remains nearly four years after the storm.
Despite the need for so much construction in New Orleans, Baton Rouge is seeing the second-highest job growth in the construction sector for a major region in the United States, according to an Associated Press story today on the findings of The Associated General Contractors of America.

Baton Rouge’s 7.3 percent gain was beaten by Odessa, Texas, which posted an 8 percent gain.•

I would be cautious about the Baton Rouge vs New Orleans MSA construction employment. These jobs are counted by place of business. What major construction company is located in Baton Rouge doing lots of the Corps of Engineers work in the New Orleans Region? The Shaw Group. If you look at the detail employment, you’ll find that most of the growth in construction employment that is listed in the Baton Rouge MSA is in heavy and utility construction. I think this is a data issue. In short, the construction jobs listed in Baton Rouge are way too high, and are located elsewhere, but reported their!

It is sad that our dumb “arse” lawmakers can’t get it right. Not only is BR benefiting, but so are the suburbs of Jackson, MS. These so called GO Zone funds were made available to developers across the state, so not to risk their investment they have spent their money everywhere except the areas most devestated by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Hence BR and not NO and the Jackson area, not Gulfport, Biloxi or Bay St. Louis are the getting the benefit. Those GO Zones funds should have been kept in the areas that needed it most and that is sad it has not happened that way.
